What does Guardian watch?
Moved from the old guide.
Guardian holds an account to the rules of its prop firm profile. It checks each trade before you send it from Trade Manager, and it marks the news windows your rules restrict on the News Calendar.
Guardian tracks your limits and warns you before one is crossed, on both plans.
Checks before a trade#
Before you submit any trade, the Trade Manager runs a series of automatic compliance checks against your account's Guardian rules. These checks happen instantly and tell you whether the trade is safe to take.
The checks include:
- Max lot size: Is the calculated lot size within your allowed maximum?
- Max risk %: Does the dollar risk exceed your configured maximum risk per trade?
- Daily drawdown limit: Would this trade, if it hit SL, push you past your daily drawdown limit?
- Max drawdown limit: Would a full loss breach your overall maximum drawdown?
- Max consecutive losses: Have you hit your consecutive loss limit? If so, further trading is paused.
- Max open trades: Are you already at your maximum number of simultaneous positions?
- Max total exposure: Would adding this position exceed your total exposure limit across all open trades?
Status Indicators#
Each compliance check shows one of three status indicators:
- Pass. Trade is within limits. You are clear to proceed.
- Warning. Close to a limit. The trade is allowed but you should proceed with caution. For example, you are at four of your five allowed open trades.
- Blocked. Taking this trade would violate a rule. The submit button is disabled until you adjust the parameters or the condition clears.
News restrictions#
If your account has a Guardian profile with news trading restrictions enabled, the calendar integrates directly with those rules. Events that fall within your restricted windows are highlighted so you can see at a glance when you should not be entering trades.
Restricted windows are defined by two buffers:
- Pre-news buffer: The time before a high-impact event when you should avoid new entries. For example, a 30-minute pre-news buffer on Non-Farm Payrolls means no new trades from 12:00 UTC if the release is at 12:30 UTC.
- Post-news buffer: The time after the release when volatility is still elevated. A 15-minute post-news buffer means you wait until 12:45 UTC before entering new trades.
These buffers are configured in your account's Guardian settings. The calendar simply reflects them visually so you do not have to remember the exact times.
Guardian restrictions apply to trade execution through the Trade Manager. The calendar highlights are informational. If you trade directly in MT5 without using Trade Manager commands, Guardian cannot block the trade.
Affected Pairs#
For each upcoming event, the calendar shows which of your currently open pairs will be affected. This uses the same currency extraction logic as the "My Pairs" filter.
If US CPI is about to be released and you have open positions on EURUSD, USDJPY, and GBPUSD, all three will be flagged because they all contain USD. A pair like EURGBP would not be flagged because it does not involve the dollar.
This helps you decide whether to close, hedge, or simply be aware of positions that could see sudden volatility from the release.
The limit that applies#
Guardian does not stop a robot. A robot on your MetaTrader keeps running and can open new trades until you remove it from its chart.
